See Where the Sound Effects in Cyberpunk 2077 Were Recorded
Have you ever wondered how the sound effects we hear in games are created? For Cyberpunk 2077‘s expansion Phantom Liberty, some of these sounds were taken from some pretty interesting places. The game’s sound designer, Sebastian Sagastume, recorded some of the gunshots from the sounds of a beverage machine at a KFC at night.
The Sounds in Cyberpunk 2077 Came from KFC
Sebastian Sagastume talked about the interesting moments he encountered while recording the sound for Phantom Liberty in his presentation at the Digital Dragons conference. According to his description, he was waiting for food at a KFC branch late at night when he noticed the sounds coming from the beverage machine. At that moment, he thought that they sounded like gunshots and immediately started recording the sounds with the recorder he was carrying. He even shared that he offered to buy a soda from the store manager to ask for a few minutes of silence during this time.
The recorded sounds were then integrated into the game. In particular, some weapons in Phantom Liberty use the fizzy and foamy sounds produced by the beverage machine without the players realizing it. These sounds were processed in a digital environment and reinterpreted as if a gun was being fired or being reloaded in Night City.
Sagastume, who was not limited to the sounds in KFC, stated that he got the inspiration for the gun sounds from various sounds he encountered in his daily life. For example, the firing sound of the Hercules weapon used in Phantom Liberty is actually the boiling sound of his partner boiling vegetables. This shows how creatively the atmosphere in the game was shaped.
These details show how creative a field game development is, not just a game. In Sagastume’s words, the important thing is to find sources that organically evoke gun sounds. After all, no one would have thought that a fast food restaurant’s beverage machine would one day provide the sound for Cyberpunk 2077.
