Sega Master System Still On Sale In Brazil

Although the Sega Master System has been erased from history in many parts of the world, it is still actively sold in Brazil. Moreover, these sales do not appeal to a nostalgic audience, but to real player demands. This 8-bit console, which entered Brazil in 1989, has become engraved in the country’s gaming culture thanks to TecToy’s local production and marketing strategies.

Why is the Sega Master System Still Produced in Brazil?

The Sega Master System has had a great impact on shaping the gaming culture in Brazil. Due to high import taxes and economic restrictions, foreign consoles entering the country were quite limited. TecToy, on the other hand, turned this situation into an opportunity and established a local partnership with Sega and moved the production of the Master System entirely to Brazil. In this way, the console began to appeal to a wide audience with its affordable price.

Today, the Master System is on sale in a modernized version called “Evolution.” This new model, which comes with 132 built-in games and two controllers, sells for around $50. The product is marketed as a first console experience for children. However, its target audience is not limited to children; adult gamers who have a nostalgic connection still prefer this system.

Another reason for the console’s longevity is that the gaming culture in Brazil is not imported, but shaped locally. TecToy’s translation of games into Portuguese, adaptation of comic book characters to games and adaptation to television systems allowed gamers to establish an emotional bond with the Sega Master System. This led to the console becoming a cult rather than being forgotten over time.

The Master System, which is still produced in hundreds of thousands of units per year, is not just an old console in Brazil; it is also a cultural icon. TecToy has no intention of stopping production because the Sega Master System has a strong place in the country in terms of both accessibility and sense of belonging. In short, Brazil continues to be the last bastion of this legendary console.
