Shadow of the Erdtree Map Will Be Big
In an interview with PC Gamer, Hidetaka Miyazaki gave important information about the size of Elden Ring’s expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree. Miyazaki stated that he wanted players to relive “that sense of discovery and wonder” for the Shadow of the Erdtree Map and explained why the expansion had to be so big.
Shadow of the Erdtree Map Will Be Big
FromSoftware has been tight-lipped about the size of Shadow of the Erdtree, the Elden Ring expansion that has been in development for over two years. The developer has hinted that the expansion will be as big as the Limgrave region in the main game. The map is full of cliffs and canyons, more complex than any part of the current map and full of surprises waiting to be discovered.
“There were a lot of possibilities at the beginning, but one of the things that was determined very early on was size,” said FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki. “We wanted that sense of scale for this map because we wanted an experience for the player that would match that of the main game. We wanted them to relive the sense of exploration, the sense of wonder and discovery, and we needed a map that would support and reinforce that.”
“Obviously it’s exactly the same, but smaller wouldn’t quite cut it, so we wanted to approach it with a sense of granularity, which is the word we used,” said Miyazaki. “How dense this map is and the ratio of old dungeons to open areas and how they intertwine. That was something we wanted to reinvent in the DLC: To recapture that sense of scale, but in a slightly different way and with a slightly different level of detail.”
Shadow of the Erdtree is set for release on June 21, 2024. The game will be released on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox X and S Series, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows platforms.
