Shakespeare’s Macbeth Becomes a Video Game
The Royal Shakespeare Company is turning the classic Macbeth by the famous English playwright William Shakespeare into a video game. Called Lili, the interactive production is billed as a “screen-life thriller” where you access the personal devices of a modern-day Lady Macbeth. Designed in a neo-noir aesthetic, the game is set in modern-day Iran, where surveillance and authoritarian regimes are a part of everyday life. Players will have the chance to shape the story by making decisions that affect Lady Macbeth’s fate.
Lili: A Neo-Noir Take on Macbeth
Lili is a modern take on Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The story unfolds through the personal devices of Lady Macbeth (called Lili in the game). Developed in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company’s New York-based independent game studio iNK Stories, the game combines live-action cinema with the interactive game format. This allows players to fully immerse themselves in Lady Macbeth’s world and direct the story.
The creative team of the game is supported by iNK Stories, which has previously produced award-winning independent games such as 1979 Revolution: Black Friday. Famous actor Zar Amir plays Lady Macbeth in Lili. This strong cast and innovative approach aim to set Lili apart from other interactive games.
The Royal Shakespeare Company has announced the release date of Lili as late 2025. The game combines a classic work with modern technologies, targeting both Shakespeare fans and game enthusiasts. Lili will not only be a game, but also a cultural experience.
Shakespeare’s immortal work Macbeth reappears with Lili not only as a game, but also as a work of art. It adapts a classic story to the present day by addressing modern themes such as surveillance and authoritarian regimes. This game, which has already sparked great curiosity, will bring together the worlds of literature and games, offering an unforgettable experience.
