Science fiction legend Sigourney Weaver has renewed hope for the future of the Alien franchise. Speaking at New York Comic Con, the veteran actress revealed that she had read the new 50-page script by producer Walter Hill and was very impressed. “This story captures Ripley’s true identity,” Weaver said, thrilling fans. “I don’t know if it will work, but it’s a really strong start.”

Speaking at the event, Weaver explained that the script explores how Ripley is ostracized by society. “It tells the story of a world where someone who tries to help humanity is imprisoned. That felt very real to me,” she said. The actress also stated that she has met with Fox and Disney officials, but the project has not yet received official approval. Weaver’s comments rekindled the possibility of a return to the Alien saga, which has spanned over 45 years.

Weaver was joined on the panel by Veronica Cartwright, who played Lambert in the original film. The two shared their memories of the filming process for the 1979 film. Weaver explained that accepting the role was due to the “power of the story,” saying, “For me, it’s not about genre, it’s about the story. When I read the Alien script, I knew it was something unique.” She described the contributions of the film’s creators, Ridley Scott, H.R. Giger, and Carlo Rambaldi, as “a vision never before seen in cinema.”

While evaluating Ripley’s place in film history, Weaver also criticized how female characters were perceived at the time. “No one predicted the survivor would be a woman. That was made possible by the courage of Walter Hill and David Giler,” she said. The actress emphasized that the character’s strength “represents the resilience of being human, beyond being a woman.”

Numerous details about Alien, Aliens, and Alien 3 were also shared throughout the panel. Weaver described the script for James Cameron’s second film as “one of the most powerful scripts I’ve ever read” and heaped praise on the director. Regarding David Fincher’s Alien 3, she said, “Despite the challenging conditions it was filmed in, I had absolute faith in Fincher.”

Finally, the actress spoke about the new installments in the series, Alien: Romulus and Alien: Earth. Weaver, who stated that she enjoyed both films, addressed the young actors: “These films are a huge responsibility, but they’re also an incredible opportunity. Don’t be too hard on yourself; get on stage and do your best.”

Weaver’s words aren’t just a nostalgic note; they also signal a possible rebirth of Ellen Ripley, a character who has left her mark on cinematic history. It seems the final word hasn’t been spoken yet on the Alien universe.
