Some Elements Should Never Exist in The Witcher

The Witcher has evolved into a vast universe, from books and games to TV series and anime. However, series creator Andrzej Sapkowski recently stated that some elements should not have existed in the Witcher world at all. In his view, some prominent details in the games, in particular, undermine the spirit of the series.

The Witcher Schools Debate

Sapkowski specifically highlighted the “Witcher Schools” popularized by the games within the Witcher universe. He stated that he finds it inappropriate that this element, which appears only in a single sentence in the books, has grown over time and become a fundamental system in the games. In his opinion, concepts like the Wolf School and the Snake School undermine the core plot rather than adding depth to the story. This view has sparked intense debate among Witcher fans.

Some Elements Should Never Exist in The Witcher

In games like Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, armor, symbols, and character connections to these schools were prominent. However, Sapkowski argued that such details burdened the universe unnecessarily. He even stated that he was considering removing this single sentence entirely from future book editions. Thus, he announced his plans to reshape the Witcher universe according to his original narrative.

The author’s criticisms aren’t limited to games. He also shared similar views on the Witcher series and its anime adaptations. He believes there’s no direct connection between the original work and the adaptations. Each adaptation can be its own interpretation, but it can never surpass the power of the original source. Sapkowski also emphasized the unwavering superiority of the written word over the visual narrative.

Despite this, the Witcher universe has become a global brand thanks to the popularity of the games. Announcements for the new Witcher game, in particular, keep fans’ curiosity alive. References to the schools through Ciri’s medallion continue to play a significant role in the series’ marketing. Still, Sapkowski’s statements show how far apart the books and games will go in the future of The Witcher.
