Sonic Superstars Didn’t Meet Expectations

One of Sega’s newest games, Sonic Superstars, has not met the expected success since its release in October 2023. Sega President Shuji Utsumi stated in an interview with Eurogamer that the game’s results were disappointing. “Sonic Superstars was a disappointment in terms of its results compared to the content we delivered,” Utsumi said.

Sonic Superstars Performance and Future Plans

Utsumi stated that they tried a creative approach with Sonic Frontiers and that Sonic Superstars did not have the expected impact. However, Utsumi spoke hopefully about future projects, saying, “This time with Sonic X Shadow Generations and the next Sonic movie, we are taking steps in the direction of transmedia – movies and games working together to make things bigger. But the essence of the experience is the gameplay. The gameplay has to be very good, otherwise there is no transmedia effect.”

Sonic Superstars was released in October 2023 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC platforms. The game’s lower sales and critical acclaim compared to previous games in the series may cause Sega to reconsider its strategies for future Sonic projects.

“Sonic X Shadow Generations is actually very good, I would say great in terms of action. But next year, we’ll take it to the next level, you’ll see that at TGA,” Utsumi said, raising expectations for future projects.

Sega plans to expand the Sonic brand with games, as well as movies and other media content. However, as Utsumi noted, for this strategy to be successful, the games must first be of high quality. The fact that Sonic Superstars failed to achieve the expected success shows that the company needs to take a more careful and innovative approach to its future projects.
