Sony Fights Climate Change by Throttling PS5 Performance

PS5 is now stepping into the spotlight not only in gaming but also in sustainability. Sony has begun testing a new Power Saver mode for the PS5 to combat climate change. This feature, currently in beta, aims to reduce the console’s energy consumption by limiting performance. This initiative is part of Road to Zero, the company’s environmental initiative that has been running since 2010.

What Does PS5 Power Saver Mode Bring?

According to Sony’s official PlayStation Blog, when the Power Saver feature is enabled, supported games will run at lower performance. This will reduce the PS5’s energy consumption and environmental impact. However, if this mode is not enabled or the game doesn’t support it, there will be no change.

The effects of this mode aren’t limited to technical aspects; they could also directly impact the user experience. For example, virtual reality (VR) will be disabled, and some game features may be limited. This means players may have to sacrifice some experiences if they choose to save energy.

Another interesting aspect is the possibility that this mode could be compatible with Sony’s PS5 handheld, which hasn’t been officially announced yet. A lower-power mode could offer significant advantages for portable systems in terms of long battery life and durability.

The update also includes multi-device pairing support for DualSense controllers. Players will no longer have to re-pair between PC, Mac, and mobile devices every time they switch, making multi-platform gaming more liberating.
