Sony Is Comfortable Losing PS5 Users to PC
Sony has announced that it is not concerned about the risk of PlayStation 5 users switching to PC. Regarding the increasing game ports for the PC platform, company officials stated that this situation does not affect console sales. While the PS5 has sold 65.5 million units since its release, this figure is close to the sales of the PS4 in the same period. Sony argues that PC ports increase the reach of games and reach a wider audience rather than losing console users.
Sony’s PC Ports and Their Impact on PS5 Sales
Sony initiated its work in this area by porting the game Horizon Zero Dawn to PC for the first time in 2020. It accelerated this process by purchasing Nixxes, an expert in PC ports, in 2021. The company stated that it plans to reduce the gap between the release dates of games on PS5 and PC. For example, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was planned to come to PC only 15 months after the PS5 release.
Sony officials said, “We have not confirmed that there is a trend towards our users shifting to PC, and so far we do not see such a risk as a major threat.” The company argues that the stability in console sales shows that PC ports do not reduce the value of the PS5.
Sony believes that it will continue PC ports more “aggressively” and that this move will bring in new users. According to the company’s statements in 2024, this strategy aims to bring the console and PC communities together. Upcoming games may include PC versions of high-profile games such as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7 and Demon’s Souls.
Despite this expansion strategy for the PC platform, Sony is determined to maintain the PlayStation 5 user base. With the strong performance of console sales and the revenue generated by PC ports, this strategy could create a win-win situation for both gamers and the company.
