Sony Slashes PlayStation VR2 Price
Sony has announced a major price reduction for the PlayStation VR2, which it launched in 2023 with a retail price of $550. The device, which was announced to be sold for $400 starting in March, has been criticized for its high price and has not met sales targets so far. The new discount is considered a step taken to both deplete stocks and increase the popularity of the device.
PlayStation VR2 History and New Discount
Although PlayStation VR2 was praised for its strong performance, comfortable use and quality structure, it had difficulty appealing to a wide audience due to its high price and being compatible only with PlayStation 5. Moreover, the lack of backward compatibility with first-generation PlayStation VR games was a disappointment among users.
Sony’s price reduction aims to increase sales of the device and especially to excite users again with new games. The company announced that new games such as Alien: Rogue Incursion, Skydance’s Behemoth and Metro Awakening VR have been added to the platform. In addition, popular games such as Hitman World of Assassination will join the PlayStation VR2 library as of March.
PlayStation VR2 sales are reported to have stagnated after its first year on the market. According to Bloomberg, Sony was forced to temporarily halt production in 2024 due to low demand. Even short-term discounts of $ 200 in the past have not been able to revive sales.
It is a matter of curiosity why Sony decided to make this big price reduction so late. Some analysts suggest that the decrease in production costs made this decision possible. However, the real problem seems to be that the PlayStation VR2’s game library is limited. Unless Sony invests more in the platform, it may be difficult for users and third-party developers to increase interest in the device. With the price reduction starting in March, it is eagerly awaited how PlayStation VR2 will gain momentum in the virtual reality market.
