State of Decay 3 Breaks Its Silence

A new installment of the beloved zombie survival series, State of Decay, is finally back in the news. State of Decay 3, announced in 2020, hasn’t been seen since four years ago. However, recent reports suggest the game is still in development and its release date has been pushed back to 2027. It appears Xbox has opted to extend the development period with further investment rather than cancel the project.

State of Decay 3 Delayed to 2027 with New Investment

Jez Corden, a figure close to Xbox, stated on social media platform X that State of Decay 3 won’t be released in 2026, but rather in 2027. According to Corden, the reason for this delay is Microsoft’s additional investment in the game. While the full extent of this investment hasn’t been disclosed, it’s been stated that the studio is providing financial and technical support for the development process.

However, this news has also reignited rumors of general financial pressure on Xbox. Corden suggested that Microsoft CFO Amy Hood has set “unrealistic financial targets,” which could lead to the cancellation of some projects. It’s unclear whether State of Decay 3 will be affected. “This game is a significant project for Xbox, but I’m not sure it will meet Hood’s expectations,” Corden said.

Although the game has been delayed to 2027, it’s still considered a major “hero project” on Xbox. This suggests Microsoft is committed to rebuilding the series rather than shedding it entirely. Developer Undead Labs has also recently undergone an internal studio restructuring and completed the transition to Unreal Engine 5.

This development means State of Decay 3 will not be featured at this year’s The Game Awards or Xbox Developer_Direct. At the earliest, the game is expected to be revealed at the 2025 Xbox Games Showcase. Also, according to the information received, the game may now come not only to Xbox and PC, but also to the PS5 platform.
