Steam Deck OLED RAM Can Be Increased Through Modding
A new mod for the Steam Deck OLED offers the ability to increase the device’s RAM from 16GB to 32GB. However, this process involves complex and risky steps that only experienced users should undertake. While such hardware modifications may provide some performance improvements, they can also void the device’s warranty and cause problems with software updates.
Steam Deck OLED RAM Upgrade Mod Revealed
A video shared by the SlickBuys Mods and Repairs team reveals that the Steam Deck OLED’s RAM capacity has been increased to 32GB. This mod aims to reduce stuttering and frame rate drops by allowing more memory to be allocated to games. However, the process is not for everyone, both due to its cost and technical complexity.
To perform the modification, a suitable 32GB memory chip must be obtained. The model used costs around $110. The existing memory must be removed and a new one soldered in, requiring precise soldering skills and BIOS programming knowledge. One wrong step can render the device completely unusable.
Another disadvantage of this process is that the device is firmware-locked. This means SteamOS updates cannot be installed normally. If the update is performed, the RAM capacity drops back to 16GB and the BIOS settings must be reconfigured, negatively impacting long-term usability.
Experts advise that purchasing a more powerful portable console may be more prudent than such risky hardware modifications. Alternatively, models like the Asus ROG Ally X or Lenovo Legion Go guarantee higher performance while eliminating the risk of permanent damage to the device.
