Steel Hunters Only Lasted 3 Months

Things haven’t been looking good for live service games lately. Wargaming launched Steel Hunters with high hopes, but it quickly fell apart after failing to meet expectations. Launched just three months ago, the game will be shut down in October. The game’s peak concurrent player count reached 4,479, but in recent days, that number has dropped below 100.

Steel Hunters Shutting Down

Wargaming announced on Steam that it is pulling the plug on the game, saying, “Continuing development is no longer sustainable.” The company thanked players for their support and emphasized that this decision wasn’t made lightly. It was announced that a farewell tournament will be held before the closure, with details to be shared soon.

Steel Hunters Only Lasted 3 Months

Steel Hunters was announced as a new live-service game set in a futuristic world. It was also in development for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X. However, neither console versions were ready, nor did player interest reach the desired level. The game is scheduled to be completely shut down on October 8, 2025.

Wargaming is known for successful games like World of Tanks and World of Warships. However, Steel Hunters failed to sustain this success. The game’s short lifespan further highlighted the saturation of the live-service game market.

The recent cancellation of numerous live-service games due to low player numbers points to a notable trend in the industry. Under the dominance of giants like Fortnite, it becomes increasingly difficult for new games to survive.
