Subnautica 2 to Release Later Than Expected

Players eagerly awaiting Subnautica 2 may be in for a bit of a disappointment today. The game’s publisher, Krafton, announced that it has postponed the release date to 2026, taking into account feedback from various testing sessions. While the timing of the decision is noteworthy, the company emphasizes that the delay was not motivated by financial considerations, but rather to focus entirely on game quality.

Subnautica 2’s Delay Decision Based on Feedback

Krafton explained on the game’s official website and in its accompanying statements that players participating in the playtest provided positive feedback regarding the environment, creature designs, and story, but noted that some areas needed improvement. Following these comments, it was decided that the game’s initial release would not be released on its planned date.

Initial reports on July 9th indicated that the game had been delayed until 2026. This development came before the development team was expected to receive an upcoming $250 million payment. However, Krafton stated that the decision was independent of financial considerations and was made solely based on the game’s current state.

A Krafton representative told Eurogamer that the delay was entirely a quality-driven decision, stating that they wanted to provide players with the best possible experience. They emphasized that this decision was not motivated by any contractual or financial concerns.

These developments come just a week after the dismissal of Charlie Cleveland and Max McGuire, co-founders of developer Unknown Worlds. According to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, the postponement was made against the wishes of the former executives. Cleveland also stated on social media that the game is ready for early access and that players are ready for it.
