Switch 2 Reaches Top of Console Sales

Nintendo’s next-generation console, the Switch 2, made a meteoric entrance into the gaming world. Launched in June 2025, the device sold over 5 million units in just five weeks, making it the biggest hardware launch in console history. This impressive start demonstrates that Nintendo’s mobile-home hybrid gaming strategy continues to resonate strongly.

Switch 2 Sales Surpass PS5 and Xbox

According to VGChartz data, the Switch 2 sold 5,011,250 units worldwide in June 2025. This represents the highest single-month console sales in gaming history. The previous record was held by the PlayStation 5 with 2.76 million units sold in November 2020. However, the Switch 2’s launch window spanned five weeks, while the PS5 achieved this figure in just three weeks.

Switch 2 Reaches Top of Console Sales

Comparatively, the Switch 2’s first-month sales are 2.68 million more than the original Switch’s in the same period in 2017. The PlayStation 5 sold 916,703 units in June, while the Xbox Series X|S ranked fourth with just 157,326 units. The Nintendo Switch 1, though third with 316,250 units, saw a 58.7% year-over-year decline.

The Switch 2’s regional sales are also striking. With over 1.9 million units sold in Asia and the Americas, 1.1 million in Europe, and approximately 87,000 in Oceania. Its performance in these regions clearly demonstrates the device’s global adoption.

Based on the first half of the year, the Switch 2 ranked just behind the PlayStation 5 with 5.01 million total sales. However, this figure reflects only a single month’s sales. Nintendo is expected to build on this momentum with more game and surprise announcements by the end of the year. It appears the Switch 2 might not just be a new console; it could also be the start of a new era of leadership.
