However, one player in the Steam community shattered the numbers and made history on the platform. A user named Sonix broke an unprecedented record with a collection of 40,000 games, earning him a special badge in recognition.
The Peak of Game Collecting on Steam
Sonix’s library was built over a 15-year period. According to estimates, the value of the collection ranges from $248,000 to $642,000. Adding an average of seven new games per day, Sonix has built this massive library at a cost of approximately $8 per game. Interestingly, despite boasting 40,000 games, he still has over 26,000 added to his wishlist.
The user’s favorite game is Alien Swarm, released by Valve in 2010. Because they keep playtime information private, it’s unknown how much of this massive library has actually been played, but estimates suggest a significant portion remains simply “collections.”
While Sonix’s 40,000-game badge is a first for Steam, he’s not alone. Ian Brandon Anderson is approaching the record with over 39,500 games, while users like ikun, 4inarik, and Axtor top the list with tens of thousands of games. Steam’s collector badges range from 1 to 40,000, and Sonix is the only player to complete this chain.
Another interesting detail is that Sonix’s Steam level is only 303. This figure doesn’t even place him among the platform’s top 1,000 users. Steam’s highest-ranking user, Stasik, has 26,000 games, but is ranked at level 6,020. This demonstrates that there’s no direct correlation between game collecting and account level.
Sonix’s success clearly demonstrates the state of digital game collecting. While even hundreds of games can be overwhelming for some, managing an archive of 40,000 games is a feat in itself. This massive collection is likely to be talked about in the Steam community for a long time to come.
