The Fate of Retro Giant Commodore Is Now in the Hands of a YouTuber
YouTuber Christian Simpson, known for his interest in retro technologies, aka Peri Fractic, has announced that he is the new “CEO” of the Commodore brand. The agreement made with the Netherlands-based Commodore Corporation, which owns the rights to the legendary computer manufacturer of the 1980s, Commodore, draws attention with its promise to bring the brand back to life. Although the scope of the agreement is not clear, it includes 46 trademarks and is valued in seven-figure figures.
A New Era Begins for Commodore
Simpson introduced the details of the agreement, which was reached after seven months of negotiations, and the former Commodore employees involved in the project in a video he shared on his YouTube channel. These names include legends of the industry such as C64 designer Albert Charpentier, C128 developer Bill Herd, and Michael Tomczyk, who managed the launch of the Vic 20. Setting out with the vision of “honoring our past and building the future,” Simpson states that the project will have both a nostalgic and innovative aspect.
The financing of the deal is still questionable. Simpson says he remortgaged his house to get to this point. Although he says he has attracted the interest of some well-known investors, there is no final financing plan at the moment. Although Elon Musk’s name is given as an example, there is no direct investment confirmation. Despite all this, Simpson aims to transform Commodore from a nostalgic name to a real technology brand.
The fact that the Commodore name has only been used on products such as USB memory sticks and t-shirts in recent years has disappointed many fans. However, now that the brand is being guided by a loyal fan of its spirit opens the door to a more promising future. The hardware announcement to be announced in two weeks may be the first step of this transformation. It is eagerly awaited whether there will be a development that will make the Commodore name heard in the computer world again after so many years.
