The Fate of the Black Superman Project Has Been Announced
Following recent changes in the DC cinematic universe, attention has turned to the long-awaited Black Superman project. Fans, especially those interested in alternate-universe stories, were eager to see what would become of this unique Superman adaptation. It has finally become clear whether this project will be included in the reshaping plans of DC Studios under the studio’s new leadership.
Black Superman Project Cancelled
The Black Superman film was in development before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as helm of DC Studios. The script, written by Ta-Nehisi Coates, offered a different perspective, bringing Superman back to the civil rights era of the 1960s. However, according to The Wall Street Journal, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav canceled the project, citing the script as “too political.”
J.J. Abrams was reportedly attached to produce the film, with Regina King, Shaka King, and Steven Caple Jr. reportedly under consideration for director. However, J.D. Dillard stated that he had not received any official offers. The fact that the project, which was still in development, was shelved before many details were finalized disappointed fans.
Still, hope isn’t completely lost. According to the report, James Gunn and Peter Safran may revisit the project in the future. The Black Superman film, which is not currently officially in the plans, could be revisited when the right conditions arise.
Currently in production within the DCU are Peacemaker season 2, Supergirl, Clayface, and the Lanterns series. Also in the pipeline are The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, Waller, Booster Gold, and Paradise Lost. However, there is no development regarding Black Superman among these projects.
