The Future of Hyper Light Breaker Is Uncertain
The future of Hyper Light Breaker has been clouded by the challenging times faced by developer studio Heart Machine. Launching in early access in January, the game failed to garner the expected attention due to technical issues and difficulty. With a “Mixed” review rating on Steam, the game failed to sustain the studio financially, forcing Heart Machine to make difficult decisions involving layoffs.
Hyper Light Breaker Developer Heart Machine Faces Difficult Times
Heart Machine confirmed in a statement that the studio has undergone a series of layoffs. “This wasn’t our ideal path, but it was our only option under the current circumstances,” the team stated, adding that they were impacted by both Hyper Light Breaker’s challenging launch and the financial downturn in the gaming industry.
The developers announced that the project will be completed in its current form, but that no new content will be released. However, the game is reportedly set to receive a significant update in January. The studio aims to deliver a final version as “satisfying and polished” as possible with its limited resources. There are no new plans for the project after this update.
The economic uncertainty in the gaming world has further strained small independent studios. The wariness of publishers and investors towards risky projects threatens the sustainability of creative teams like Heart Machine. Hyper Light Breaker appears to have been a victim of this negative economic climate.
The studio also confirmed that it will focus its existing resources on its new game, Possessors. While development on this 2D platformer, to be published by Devolver Digital, appears unaffected, the layoffs are making future plans uncertain. Hyper Light Breaker’s journey may be coming to an end, but Heart Machine’s story is far from complete.
