The Last of Us Online Cancelled
For those who are excited about The Last of Us Online, we got bad news. Naughty Dog has announced that The Last of Us Online cancelled.
No More The Last of Us Online
One of the most popular video games of all time, The Last of Us offered intense gameplay, emotional storytelling, and beloved characters. Currently there are 2 The Last of Us games but fans were also looking forward to online version of the series as well. But it looks like this idea is abandoned and the project is no longer active.
In an announcement on the official Naughty Dog site, the studio has revealed that development on The Last of Us Online has been permanently ended. The Last of Us Online was originally being developed at the same time as The Last of Us Part 2.
While Naughty Dog and its team were looking forward to bringing a fresh multiplayer experience to the fan base, The Last of Us Online has been canceled in order to allow the studio to pursue other projects. As explained in the announcement post, Naughty Dog had to make the difficult decision between finishing The Last of Us Online and providing extended online support and content or instead focusing on the development of new single player experiences. After careful consideration, the studio opted for the latter option.
With rumors of The Last of Us Part 3 continuing to swirl, the cancelation of The Last of Us Online has left the fan base with mixed feelings. Many were sad because they were expecting a online game from The Last of Us but some are happy because they think online game feature is not suitable for The Last of Us world. They rather have single player games in the series.
Aside from that, some The Last of Us Online content also leaked online.
The Last of Us Online Leaked Features
- Battle Pass progression.
- Battle Royale mode called Survivor Solos.
- Bunk (presumably an armory).
- In-game item store.
- Jobs Board.
- Study.
- Seasonal content.
The Last of Us Online also had at least one kind of in game currency and a digital store, the screenshot reveals. Seasonal content would have been part of the package as well, together with a feature called Bunk that might have been the game’s take on the Fortnite Armory. The leak also substantiated the long standing rumor that The Last of Us Online had a battle royale mode, which was apparently called Survivor Solos during development.
The multiplayer Factions mode from The Last of Us was also expected to make a return in the canceled game, although its existence hasn’t been explicitly confirmed by this newly emerged image. What the screenshot did reveal was that The Last of Us Online had a Jobs Board which presumably offered limited time quests and a menu feature called Study, which was possibly tied to character customization and progression, much like Bunk.

Given how many resources were poured into The Last of Us Online prior to its cancelation, it is possible that the developer will attempt to repurpose some of its systems in its future titles. There are already several such unannounced Naughty Dog games in the works, although all of them are of the single player variety, making major feature exchange between them and The Last of Us Online somewhat less likely.
We will see what Naughty Dog plans to offer us for The Last of Us series. In the meantime, The Last of Us fans are looking forward to The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered release at January.
