The Story Seeds For The Phasmophobia Movie are Planted in The Game
As Phasmophobia, a favorite among horror game enthusiasts, prepares to enter the cinematic world, an interesting development has occurred. The game’s developer, Kinetic Games, announced a direct creative collaboration with the film project. Furthermore, this partnership is already bringing traces of the film’s story to the gaming world.
The Path to the Phasmophobia Movie Will Begin in the Game
Phasmophobia creator Daniel Knight explained in an interview with Eurogamer that they have created a special story universe for the game’s film adaptation, which will be directly integrated into the game. “This won’t just be a ghost hunting movie,” Knight said, emphasizing that the project’s original spirit will be preserved.
However, considering the game’s current structure, creating a solid narrative foundation for the film is difficult. The game offers standalone missions set in procedurally generated, disconnected areas. Knight stated, “There are already some small story elements in the game. We were planning a lore update before the film was decided upon,” adding that this process was actually planned in advance.
Instead of directly adding a campaign mode for the film, the filmmakers will sprinkle hidden story elements into the game that players can investigate and piece together. “Players will discover and piece these pieces together,” Knight explained. “This will directly pave the way for the story that will be told in the film.”
Phasmophobia is being developed in partnership with Blumhouse, known for its productions like M3GAN and Five Nights at Freddy’s, and Atomic Monster, part of The Conjuring universe. Knight stated that while many studios had expressed interest in the project, Blumhouse, a fan favorite, was the “perfect match.”
Phasmophobia has sold more than 25 million copies since its early access release five years ago. With the recent console releases and the massive Chronicle update having revitalized the player base, all eyes are now on version 1.0, due out in 2026—and it looks like this update will open the door to not just a game, but a film universe.
