Thunderbolts 2 Project Progresses Differently Than Expected
The long-rumored Thunderbolts 2 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe won’t be a standalone sequel, as expected. Following the box office disappointment of the first film, Marvel is opting to take this story to a larger stage. All eyes are now on Avengers: Doomsday, set for release in 2026.
The Thunderbolts Return in Avengers: Doomsday
The sequel to Thunderbolts 2 will be Avengers: Doomsday. Familiar characters like Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, and U.S. Agent will return. Other team members like the Sentry and Ghost will also return, establishing the Thunderbolts as part of Marvel’s next-generation Avengers roster.
With this decision, Marvel aims to both bring the Thunderbolts characters to a wider audience and add new dynamism to the larger Avengers films. The relationships and conflicts within the team are expected to deepen even further in Doomsday. The bond between Yelena and the Sentry, in particular, is rumored to be a key focus.
Of course, this transformation has raised questions in the minds of some fans, as there are a significant number of fans eager to see a standalone Thunderbolts 2. However, Marvel’s preference is to expand the brand under the “Avengers” umbrella. This approach, along with Doomsday and the immediately following Secret Wars, seems likely to shape the new era of the MCU.
All these developments also bring uncertainty about the team’s fate. Some characters’ stories will likely conclude with these films. The likelihood of characters like Red Guardian and U.S. Agents witnessing dramatic final scenes is particularly high. Meanwhile, Florence Pugh’s Yelena and Lewis Pullman’s Sentry are poised to become cornerstones of the MCU’s future. It seems Thunderbolts fans won’t get the standalone sequel they’ve been waiting for. However, Avengers: Doomsday will see the characters step onto Marvel’s biggest stage, and their stories will be placed within a much larger context. This means that Thunderbolts will leave a lasting mark on the MCU, even if it doesn’t get its own movie.
