Uncharted’s First Beta Released
A YouTuber has shared the earliest-seen beta version of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. This version features significant changes from the final version. This early version, which features changes in many aspects from Nathan Drake and Elena’s appearances to the gameplay system, offers an interesting glimpse into how Naughty Dog shaped the legendary series.
Differences and Removed Features Discovered in the Uncharted Beta
YouTuber Thekempy obtained this May 2007 version and conducted a detailed review. This version is known to be the same version that premiered at Sony’s Gamer Day event that same year. The footage reveals numerous differences, from the user interface to the environmental designs. One of the most striking details is the running mechanic, which allows players to make Nate run at full speed by pressing the circle button. This feature is not included in the final version.
Spider models, originally intended as enemies, were also found in the early version files. Although unfinished, this idea was later reused in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. It seems Naughty Dog had this idea in mind since the first game and finally implemented it.
There are also significant differences in the character designs. Elena Fisher’s early model has brown hair and a different facial structure. Nathan Drake has a younger, more understated appearance. One of the most striking differences is that Nate no longer wears the legendary Sir Francis Drake ring, but a strange-looking necklace.
This small detail actually makes a big difference. The ring had become a symbol at the heart of the series. The absence of this element in the early stages of the story suggests the tone of the series could have been very different. Perhaps Naughty Dog made the right decision by bringing the ring back, transforming Uncharted into what we know today.
