Valve Denies Major Leak Claims

Valve Confident That Steam Was Not Attacked

Valve stated in its statement regarding the incident that the leaked data only included old SMS messages and that these messages did not come from Steam systems. The company said, “We have reviewed the leak sample and confirmed that this is not a breach of Steam systems,” emphasizing that users do not need to change their passwords or phone numbers. It also stated that these old messages only contained single-use codes valid for 15 minutes and recipient phone numbers.

Technical assessments were made that the leak could be related to a vendor panel or API access, but it was not a direct intervention into Steam systems. Valve also explained that such SMS messages are transmitted unencrypted and therefore pass through different operators, making it difficult to identify the source of the leak.

Valve reiterated that it values data security and recommends the use of Steam Mobile Authenticator to keep users safe. It stated that notifications regarding accounts can be delivered in more secure ways. Users were also reminded to be careful about unwanted verification messages.

The scope of the incident has become clear thanks to the company’s statement. Steam users do not need to take any extra precautions due to this incident. However, it still draws attention to the importance of mobile verification and careful communication habits for account security.
