Why Were Quake, Tamagotchi, and Others Selected for the Video Game Hall of Fame 2025?

Quake, which is on the list, was released in 1996 and revolutionized the FPS genre with its 3D graphics engine and online multiplayer mode. Quake, which is considered one of the games that laid the foundations of the esports concept, also continues to inspire modern games with its modding community and open source code structure. Museum curator Lindsey Kurano emphasizes that Quake’s code continues to have an impact even on today’s games.

Another selected production, Tamagotchi, redefined the concept of gaming by offering a digital pet experience in 1996. Offering a gamified care experience on portable devices, Tamagotchi offered players a different playground such as bonding and emotional interaction. In this respect, it inspired many pet simulation games such as Neopets and Nintendogs.

Defender, released in 1981, attracted attention with its difficulty level in arcades. This horizontally scrolling space-themed shooter game raised the gaming standards of the period with its complex control scheme and fast-paced structure. Jeremy Saucier states that this game opened up space for more challenging games and focused on player skills.

Finally, GoldenEye 007 was released for Nintendo 64 in 1997 and was one of the first examples that proved the success of the FPS genre on consoles. It greatly contributed to the advancement of the genre with its four-person multiplayer mode and the richness of narrative it brought to the James Bond universe. Digital preservation director Andrew Borman states that the game influenced later FPS games, especially Halo.
