Vince Gilligan Shifts Genre with Pluribus

Vince Gilligan, who left his mark on television with cult series like Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, is now in a completely different universe. His new series, Pluribus, will air on Apple TV+ with a science fiction narrative that steers clear of crime and drama. The series, which premieres with two episodes on November 7, 2025, is already attracting attention with its tone, plot, and the actor-director partnership with Rhea Seehorn.

Pluribus: The Beginning of a Brand New Era for Gilligan

Promoted with the slogan “Happiness is Contagious,” Pluribus begins with an event that instantly changes the modern world. According to Vince Gilligan, the series features “no crime, no drugs,” marking his complete departure from the Breaking Bad universe after 17 years. Rhea Seehorn, who plays the main character Carol, will showcase her talented acting skills, known for her work on Better Call Saul, in a dystopian story.

Carol, according to the trailer, is “the unhappiest person in the world,” and ironically, her mission is to rid the world of happiness. The trailer shows a woman in a pink nurse’s outfit licking donuts from a box and returning them to a box marked “Please take.” This brief scene alone suggests the series will have both a dark and satirical tone.

The series’ cast includes Karolina Wydra, Carlos-Manuel Vesga, Miriam Shor, and Samba Schutte. Pluribus, whose first season will run for nine episodes, will conclude on December 26th and has already been renewed for a second season. Produced by Sony Pictures Television, the series’ executive producers include veteran actors Gordon Smith and Alison Tatlock, in addition to Gilligan.

Gilligan’s statement that “the world changes in an instant” signals that viewers will be treated to an unconventional narrative from the very first episode. Pluribus will excite science fiction enthusiasts while also delivering a solid character narrative inspired by Gilligan’s signature style.
