Which Ghost of Tsushima Ending is Real?
Five years have passed since Ghost of Tsushima‘s release, but players are still grappling with the same question: Did Jin forgive his uncle, or did he let him die honorably? Sucker Punch hasn’t yet offered a definitive explanation, but a small detail in Ghost of Yotei appears to offer a compelling clue that could settle the debate.
Detail in Ghost of Yotei Reveals Ghost of Tsushima’s True Ending
Attentive players of Ghost of Yotei noticed an intriguing detail about Jin Sakai’s grave during a side quest to his home in Ezo. This grave, visited by Atsu, contains Jin’s legendary Storm Sword and Ghost mask. However, the red leaves on the grave may hold a much deeper meaning regarding the game’s ending.
In the Ghost community on Reddit, user StrongWafer2631 asked players for their opinions on “which ending is now true?” after this detail in Yotei. Most comments agreed that Jin forgave his uncle. User mrblonde55 pointed out a key point that supports this theory: Jin’s grave in Yotei is covered in red leaves.
This small but significant detail also appears in the scene symbolizing Tsushima’s “forgiveness” ending. In the scene where Jin spares his uncle’s life rather than killing him, the surroundings are covered with the same red leaves. Therefore, this symbolic color on the grave may hint at which ending Sucker Punch has chosen as “canonical.”
Some players argue that this could simply be a reference to Shimura and Jin’s final duel, but most believe this scene was a deliberate choice. Furthermore, details suggesting Jin escaped and hid from Tsushima also support this theory. QuietSync, a player, reinforces this idea by commenting, “Jin may have been hunted because he didn’t kill his uncle but lost his public honor.”
Sucker Punch has previously offered conflicting explanations on the matter. Director Nate Fox stated in an interview, “Jin forgiving his uncle is the true ending,” then added that Yotei accepts both endings. Yet, the red leaves in Ghost of Yotei seem to resolve this ambiguity. Jin Sakai ultimately chooses forgiveness—and the lasting imprint of his story lives on in the winds of Tsushima, the red leaves.
