Why Did Ciri Become the Protagonist?
The Witcher 4, the new game in the Witcher series, will feature Ciri in the lead role. CD Projekt RED, which completed Geralt’s story in the third game, decided to focus on Ciri’s adventures in the continuation of the series. So why is Ciri replacing Geralt? The development team answered this question.
Ciri Was Planned to Be the Leading Role 9 Years Ago
The Witcher 4 executive producer Malgorzata Mitrega stated that Ciri was “an organic and logical choice.” Mitrega said, “In the books, it was always about her. Ciri is an incredible, layered character. We said goodbye to Geralt in the previous games, this is a continuation. I think for all of us, Ciri was created for this role.”
The game’s director, Sebastian Kalemba, also emphasized that they will be able to explore the character more freely because Ciri is younger than Geralt: “Ciri is about to become a Witcher. She will create her own rules, in her own style. Her way of dealing with monsters, quests, and adventures will be unique to her. This gives us more room to tell different stories.”
CD Projekt RED is aware that some players may react negatively to this decision. However, the studio emphasizes that they did not bring Ciri forward with an agenda. Kalemba states that this was planned 9 years ago:
“Ciri being the lead role was a conscious choice and not a coincidence. I remember talking 9 years ago about ‘Who’s next?’ The answer was very clear: Ciri. There are many reasons for this. Ciri deserves to tell her own story and we want to give players her experience because she has a lot to tell.”
The Witcher 4 has not yet been released, but players are eagerly awaiting Ciri’s adventure. CD Projekt RED is expected to bring a new breath to the iconic series.
