Why Is This Fallout 3 DLC So Expensive?
It is a fact that collector game prices have been increasing in recent years, but some examples still manage to surprise. A sealed box of Mothership Zeta, one of Fallout 3’s downloadable content, has become a topic of discussion for gamers with its $2,499.99 tag, despite only having a download code inside. Neither collectors nor Fallout fans fully understand how this price is determined.
Is Fallout 3 Mothership Zeta DLC Really That Rare?
This sale ad, which came to the agenda on the Fallout subreddit, raised the question of how a box with no physical content could reach such a high price. The box does not contain a disc, only a download code. Some users claim that Mothership Zeta is the only content among Fallout 3 DLCs that is not physically printed and is therefore considered rare. However, there is no official source or confirmation on this subject.
According to price tracking site pricecharting.com, a sealed box of this DLC last sold for $300 in 2021. More recent sales have been much lower. An opened box sold for $49.95 in 2023, and four years ago it sold for $69.99. This suggests that the item in question is rare but not valuable enough to justify a $2,500 price tag.
Some users believe that this sale is merely a “conversation starter” and that the seller has no real intention of selling the item. There have been instances in the past where a game store has priced it this way to attract attention. One Reddit user humorously commented, “Maybe they meant 2,499 kapa (bottle cap),” referencing the Fallout universe.
While even Fallout fans find this price unreasonable, the fact that the topic is talked about so much may be a marketing tactic for the store. It is not known whether there will be a real buyer, but it has certainly managed to create controversy.
