Why Was Margaret Qualley Cast for Death Stranding?

Death Stranding had a cast full of stars like Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, and Léa Seydoux. However, the characters of Mama and Lockne, played by Margaret Qualley, stood out among this huge cast. Hideo Kojima shared a statement on social media to share with his fans how Qualley was chosen for this important role and how she caught his attention. It seems that Kojima’s choice was not a coincidence, but the product of pure creative inspiration.

Margaret Qualley Caught Kojima’s Attention in a Commercial

According to Hideo Kojima’s statement, there is a very interesting story behind choosing Margaret Qualley for Death Stranding. When the famous director watched the KENZO commercial in which Qualley played the leading role in 2016, he was greatly impressed by the actress’ energy and physical performance. In the commercial, Qualley appears to be an ordinary audience member in the middle of an official ceremony, but suddenly starts dancing wildly, as if losing herself, and fills the entire building with her energy.

This impressive performance did not go unnoticed by Kojima. The director summarized the process in a post on social media with the words, “I saw this video and immediately offered her the role of Mama in Death Stranding.” Considering that Kojima is known for always discovering extraordinary talents, this choice is not surprising at all. Especially for a production like Death Stranding, which prioritizes emotional depth and physical expression, Qualley’s acting and body language are a perfect match.

Margaret Qualley, who played twin characters Mama and Lockne in Death Stranding, showed not only her physical performance but also her emotional depth with her acting. In this way, she made a significant contribution to the atmosphere of the game and her performance received full marks from critics. It has not yet been official whether Qualley will take part in Death Stranding 2. However, the impact this project had on the actress’s career has proven once again that Kojima made the right choice.
