Will the Superman Movie Be Political?

New statements have been made regarding the Superman film, one of the most anticipated projects of the DC universe. The director of the film, James Gunn, confirmed that the production contains political messages, while stating that there is a universal value of humanity at its center. Gunn’s comments provide important clues about the tone of the film.

According to James Gunn, the Superman Film is “About Humanity”

James Gunn defined the character of Superman as “the story of an immigrant from somewhere else”, while emphasizing that “basic human decency” is at the center of the film. In an interview with The Sunday Times, he said that Superman is similar to the story of America and that this story has political aspects. However, according to Gunn, the real issue is to remind people of the human values that have been lost today.

Will the Superman Movie Be Political?

The film stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The cast also includes Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner), and Gabriela de Faría (The Engineer). Although Gunn admits that the film may be perceived differently by different political circles, he argues that the values at the center are common to everyone.

The director continued by stating that the film offers a discussion not only about politics but also moral values. The conflict of ideas between Superman’s belief in never killing and Lois Lane’s more balanced approach guides the story. Gunn also says that focusing on a “good” character is important for today in response to the increasing harshness in the online environment culturally.

The first trailer for the film also featured the fan-favorite Krypto character. Gunn revealed that he included Krypto in the script inspired by his adopted dog Ozu and that they transferred his image to the film with CGI. The new Superman movie will be released on July 11, 2025.
