Windows 95 Installed on PlayStation 2

The modding community occasionally presents seemingly impossible projects, but some are truly astonishing. One such project was recently implemented by installing Windows 95 on the PlayStation 2. This intriguing experiment, completed despite hardware limitations, combines nostalgia with technological curiosity.

How Did Windows 95 Work on the PlayStation 2?

Although the PlayStation 2 was released in 2000, it was never designed to support a PC-based operating system. The console’s MIPS architecture is incompatible with the x86 platform required by Windows 95. Therefore, direct installation was not possible. However, YouTuber and modding enthusiast MetraByte overcame this obstacle with the help of an emulator.

Using the x86 emulator Bochs, MetraByte managed to make the PS2 work virtually like a PC. Running Windows 95 on a device with a 294 MHz processor and 32 MB of RAM was, of course, not easy. After a total of 14 hours of work, the operating system booted, but performance was extremely slow. The system was unstable, applications were slow to respond, and many tasks were inoperable.

One of the biggest problems concerned input devices. Because the PS2 didn’t support a standard mouse, control was only possible with a keyboard and a joystick. This made the process extremely difficult. In its video, MetraByte emphasized that the mouse cursor froze in the middle of the screen, making even simple tasks nearly impossible.

The most striking aspect of the project was the inability to run DOOM, a game famous for being “available on every device,” on this system. This detail clearly highlighted the PS2’s limitations. Nevertheless, this effort once again demonstrated the value of creative projects built on older technologies. For retro technology enthusiasts, such experiments offer both a taste of nostalgia and an opportunity to push the boundaries of technical knowledge.
