Witcher 3 Director Sets Out for Vampire RPG
The legendary director of Witcher 3, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, left CD Projekt Red to establish his own studio, Rebel Wolves. Tomaszkiewicz announced that he decided to leave with the vision of developing new projects. Their first project, the open-world vampire RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker, was started with a smaller team in order to gain creative freedom. According to Tomaszkiewicz, the strict RPG rules applied in large studios can be relaxed in an independent environment and pave the way for more innovative projects.
Reason for Leaving Witcher 3 and New Vision
Tomaszkiewicz stated that he wanted to create more original and risky projects after a great success like Witcher 3. Tomaszkiewicz, who touched on the difficulty of realizing such projects in a giant company like CDPR, said, “If we wanted to bring our crazy ideas to life, we had to establish our own studio.” Stating that large companies are reluctant to invest in projects outside of their existing intellectual property (IP), Tomaszkiewicz preferred to adopt a more innovative approach with Rebel Wolves.
Rebel Wolves’ first project, The Blood of Dawnwalker, tells the story of a young man who becomes a Dawnwalker, a creature mixed between human and vampire. The game, which draws attention with its dark atmosphere and scary vampire designs, is inspired by Tomaszkiewicz’s previous experiences. The creative team aims to expand the traditional rules of RPG and take the genre to a different level. However, not many gameplay details have been shared about the game yet.
Tomaszkiewicz stated that Rebel Wolves’ smaller team facilitates communication and increases creative energy. Tomaszkiewicz emphasized that a small team can work faster and more effectively, and stated that this structure better serves their creative vision. Despite leaving CDPR, his former colleagues expressed their support for Rebel Wolves and stated that the studio has common values.
