World War Z Made Us Wait 12 Years
The zombie craze, launched by George A. Romero with Night of the Living Dead, has been revived numerous times in film and television. The Brad Pitt-starring World War Z, released in 2013, grossed $540 million, making it one of the highest grossing films in the genre. However, due to its high cost, a sequel has been delayed for years.
The Wait for World War Z 2 Is Over
The merger of Paramount and Skydance has accelerated the studio’s plans to revitalize its legacy franchises. CEO David Ellison confirmed that World War Z 2 is back on the agenda. This announcement comes alongside new Star Trek and Top Gun projects, as well as major franchises.
A sequel, originally planned for J.A. Bayona in 2015 and written by Steven Knight, never reached production. A smaller-budget project was planned for David Fincher and Brad Pitt in 2019, but Paramount also canceled this version. Fincher stated that the idea bore thematic similarities to The Last of Us and that he was pleased it wasn’t brought forward.
Paramount’s recent focus on the horror genre strengthens the possibility of a return for the World War Z franchise. The studio’s schedule includes productions like A Quiet Place Part III, Smile 3, and Scream 7, and it seems likely that this zombie epic will join the ranks.
While an official release date hasn’t yet been announced, the possibility of World War Z returning after a 12-year hiatus is already generating excitement among fans. If the project materializes, it will be a matter of curiosity whether Brad Pitt will return and whether the film will break the records of the original.
