Xbox Abandons Contraband Project
Contraband, unveiled by Xbox at E3 2021 and developed by Avalanche Studios, has been a highly anticipated project for years. The game, set in a fictional setting in the 1970s and notable for its open-world co-op structure, had been in development for five years. However, recent news has revealed that active development has been halted, leaving the game’s future uncertain. Players have reacted to this decision with both surprise and disappointment.
Contraband’s Future Uncertain
According to Game File’s Stephen Totilo, Microsoft recently decided to halt development on Contraband. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier claimed that this decision effectively amounts to a direct cancellation. While Microsoft has not commented on the matter, Avalanche Studios’ official statement indicates that no clear decision has been reached regarding the game’s future.
A message shared on Avalanche Studios’ website reads, “We’ve been working on Contraband with Xbox Game Studios Publishing for years. Active development has now stopped, and we’re evaluating the project’s future. We’re grateful for the community response and will share information about its future as soon as possible.”
Contraband has attracted considerable attention since its announcement, particularly for its concept. Set in a fictional 1970s-themed setting, its open-world setting aimed to offer players a comprehensive exploration and cooperative experience. However, the recent removal of the game’s trailer from Xbox’s official YouTube channel has further fueled cancellation rumors.
Following the mass layoffs at Xbox last July, questions arose about the game’s status. While some job postings at the time suggested the project was still ongoing, all signs point to the end of Contraband’s development. Nevertheless, players appear poised to maintain hope until official sources confirm the project’s complete cancellation.
