Xbox Game Pass Isn’t For Everyone
As the number of options in the gaming world increases, it becomes more difficult for players to make choices. While services like Xbox Game Pass provide an attractive alternative by offering access to hundreds of games, this system may not be suitable for everyone. The statements of Microsoft’s gaming division president Phil Spencer clearly show this situation.
Xbox Game Pass Doesn’t Appeal to Every Gamer
Phil Spencer stated in a new interview with Variety that Xbox Game Pass is not the ideal model for everyone. According to Spencer, while this service can be a great option for players who want to experience a lot of games, it is not suitable for those who only play a few games per year. He emphasized that Game Pass should exist together with other game purchasing models in the Xbox ecosystem.
Game Pass’s success is measured by the total amount of time players spend playing, rather than the number of subscriptions. Spencer said, “If a player only plays one or two games a year, it makes more sense to buy those games,” and added that the service is only affordable for players who play a lot. Therefore, having every game on Game Pass available for purchase is an important part of Microsoft’s strategy.
Microsoft’s biggest growth areas right now are PC and cloud gaming. Spencer says that the console market is a saturated sector, but there has been a significant increase in users and hours on the PC and cloud side. This indicates that Game Pass will be expanded to new distribution areas in order to reach a wider player base in the long term.
Spencer also stated that the fact that Game Pass subscribers are inclined to purchase games is a positive result for the company. He added that the service offers players not only ease of access, but also freedom. Microsoft’s goal is to give players choice and expand the ecosystem by offering these options on more platforms.
