Xbox Now More Expensive for Developers
Microsoft has raised the price of the Xbox developer kit. This decision has drawn attention from studios working on new game projects. The increase could impact not only hardware costs but also production balances within the console ecosystem.
Xbox Developer Kit Price Increased by 30%
Microsoft has increased the price of the Xbox Development Kit by 30%, from $1,500 to $2,000. The company’s statement to developers stated that this adjustment “reflects global economic developments.” Microsoft also emphasized that they “will continue to provide high-quality tools and support.”
This increase applies not only to developers in the US but also to studios in Europe and other regions. According to The Verge, the decision took effect immediately. Xbox development kits were already expensive because they included test hardware for both the Series X and Series S models. The new increase represents an additional burden, especially for indie developers.
In recent months, Microsoft has increased the price not only of developer kits but also of its own hardware and services. The Xbox Series X’s US price has risen to $649.99, while the Game Pass Ultimate subscription has increased to £22.99 per month in the UK. While the increases haven’t yet been reflected in some countries, the overall picture suggests that costs are steadily rising.
Financial reports in July revealed Microsoft’s revenue growth. The company achieved record subscription revenue thanks to Game Pass. CEO Satya Nadella stated in July, “Microsoft continues to grow.” However, the costs of this growth are now being felt by developers.
Xbox has long been associated with the slogan “the best deal for gamers.” But with repeated price hikes, that title has been called into question. Still, Microsoft appears determined to maintain its gaming ecosystem; it’s just that the price of being a part of it is now a bit higher.
