You Can’t Buy Movies on Xbox Anymore
Microsoft, in a sudden decision that surprised its users, has ended sales of movies and TV series on Xbox and Windows platforms. The company announced this decision in an FAQ update published on its official support page. As of July 18th, it will no longer be possible to purchase or rent new content; however, previously purchased titles will remain available to watch.
Purchased Movies on Xbox Won’t Be Deleted, But New Ones Won’t Be Added
Microsoft’s decision aligns with a general shift in digital media. Apple and Google have similarly slowed or discontinued content sales on their platforms. The company states that users will be able to access previously purchased movies and TV series on Xbox and Windows devices. Furthermore, personal video playback is still supported.
However, purchased content cannot be transferred to another platform or refunded. Due to Microsoft’s terms of sale, refunds for digital content are not available. Users are advised to use alternative platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home to access new titles.
This decision is believed to be in line with Microsoft’s overall restructuring process. Earlier this month, the company parted ways with approximately 9,000 employees, including its gaming division. This could be an indication that the company is downsizing in various areas.
For Xbox users, this decision raises new questions about the future of digital content ownership. Users who are turning to digital instead of physical media are concerned about the adoption of similar practices by other service providers.
