AAA Games Don’t Appeal to the Next Generation of Gamers

The gaming industry has been driven by graphic quality for years. Big-budget productions aim to offer more realistic visuals with each new generation. However, recent research shows that young gamers, in particular, are not paying as much attention to this competition as before. Data shared by NewZoo reveals that the expected connection between the new generation of gamers who grew up with AAA games is not always established.

Different Experiences Are Taking Center Stage Instead of AAA Games

According to NewZoo’s research, the world’s most popular games are not always those with the most realistic graphics. Games like Minecraft and Roblox, which are visually simpler but offer players more freedom, have a much stronger following, especially among young gamers.

Ben Porter, consulting director who evaluated the research, stated at GDC that this trend has become increasingly evident over the past decade. According to him, the industry has long chased after graphic quality, but a large portion of gamers are actually looking for something different.

The data shows that a Roblox player is significantly less likely to try traditional AAA titles than the average gamer. For example, on PlayStation and Xbox, Roblox players are about 0.4 times more likely to play big-budget titles like Monster Hunter Wilds.

In contrast, Minecraft and Roblox players are much more likely to gravitate towards live-service games like Fortnite, GTA 5, and Call of Duty. The research reveals that these players are generally more interested in social, constantly updated games where players can create their own experiences. This leaves a crucial question for AAA games: Do the new generation of gamers really want the same things?
