Alfred Molina Clarifies the Possibility of a Return to the MCU
Alfred Molina still holds a special place in the hearts of fans for his portrayal of Doctor Octopus, one of the most memorable villains in the Spider-Man universe. His performance in the 2004 film Spider-Man 2 is still considered one of the strongest villain interpretations in comic book adaptations, even years later. Now, in a new statement, Alfred Molina has shown that he hasn’t completely closed the door on a possible return to the MCU.
Alfred Molina Opens to the Doctor Octopus Role
Alfred Molina revealed that he actually signed a three-film deal for Doctor Octopus during the Spider-Man 2 era. The actor stated that he now considers this option invalid because the character sacrifices himself at the end of the film. However, Avi Arad’s approach at the time, saying “no one truly dies in this universe,” seemed like a small sign of a possible return years later.
Molina’s return as Doctor Octopus took place in the 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home. The character was pulled into a different universe just before his death in his own timeline, where he confronted Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. After freeing himself from his mind’s control, Otto Octavius helped the other Spider-Men in the finale, making a fan-favorite comeback.
The actor said he doesn’t know if he’ll return to the role in the future, but he wouldn’t hesitate if offered. However, he added he wasn’t entirely sure it would happen. According to Molina, Doctor Octopus could be left in a powerful and special place in the gallery of Spider-Man villains. These words suggest the door is open, but there’s no definite plan in the near future.
Alfred Molina also expressed excitement for the new Spider-Man film, Brand New Day, but said he doesn’t know much about the villain. For now, Doctor Octopus isn’t expected to return anytime soon, but the multiverse door isn’t completely closed. Since anything is possible in the Spider-Man universe, the possibility of Molina’s return will remain on fans’ radar.
