Alone in the Dark Review
The game made it’s launch at 20 March 2024 and here is the Alone in the Dark Review we prepared for you.
Alone in the Dark Review Beginning
Alone in the Dark is actually a 1992 released game and developed by Infogrames. After 32 years of it’s release, the game Remaked and modernized by Pieces Interactive and THQ Nordic published the game. The game contains differences between the original and Remake / Reboot version, but we can say that it’s mostly loyal to it’s original version. More details will be given in the other sections of review. But first, we will explore Story, Gameplay and other details about the game.
Alone in the Dark Gameplay
Alone in the Dark is an action horror TPS game. In the gameplay, we encounter various enemies in order to reveal the truth about Emily’s uncle. There are two playable characters in the game: Edward Carnby and Emily Hartwood. Gameplay basics are mainly similar to Resident Evil games. You have three types of weapon. One is your basic weapon, which is revolver for Edward Carnby and basic handgun for Emily Hartwood. The other weapons are can be found in your gameplay. These weapons are Shotgun and Tommy Gun. Aside from your main weapons, you can find other throwable and usable items such as pipe, hatchet, brick and molotov. If you use them corrently, you don’t waste a lot of bullet and kill at least two enemies at once. These items are very useful if you are trying to conserve ammo.
Alone in the Dark as three difficulty selections: Easy, Normal and Hard. There is no difficulty above these, maybe developers will add more difficulties in the future but currently it’s like this. The game also doesn’t include any unlockables. Generally these games would contain extra content such as unlimited ammo, different outfits but maybe developers thought the game will not take more attention so they just decided to leave it there.
In our journey through Derceto, there are a lot of puzzles which you will solve in your playthrough. Collectible files will mainly explain backstory and will give you hints about puzzles, so you might want to read them closely. Aside from files, you will also find collectibles, which will be named as Lagniappes. Sadly collecting all of them will only help you unlock endings.
Alone in the Dark enemy types are not too much. You will encounter three type of enemies in your playthrough. First one is similar to human but swarmed with worms, second one is like bugs and the last enemy type is like flies. When we are talking about enemies, we can also talk about boss enemies in the game. Alone in the Dark contains only 2 boss enemies. Game has 5 chapters, considering these bosses and game length, we can say that it’s not enough and you will find plenty of ammunation in the game, more bosses would be much better.
Previously we talked about chapter count and length of the game. Considering other action horror games, Alone in the Dark is really short game. If you don’t get stuck at some certain levels, you can beat the game in a very short time. Of course we love short games too but long adventures will affect you more deeply. Because the length of the game, we don’t encounter many bosses. There is only 2 bosses you can beat and both of them are at the end of the game. Maybe more boss enemies would be much better.
Other Alone in the Dark features such as puzzles, enemy difficulties and places are decent. Puzzles are not that hard, enemies are easy to counter since you also have dodge mechanic and places are atmospheric. When you enter another dream, the place you are in will change and take another shape. Developers made really well job with places in the game.
Alone in the Dark Story
Note: This section contains spoilers. If you want to play the game and learn story by youself, avoid this section.
Alone in the Dark story starts with travel, Edward Carnby and Emily Hartwood arrives at Derceto. Emily wants to find his uncle, Jeremy Hartwood and hires Edward Carnby. Edward is a detective. When they arrive, they meet with other Derceto members. Derceto is a psychiatric hospital and Jeremy is one of patients there. When they arrived, they say that her uncle is missing and they don’t know when he will come or will actually come. After that, Edward and Emily starts to investigate Jeremy’s room and other sections of the Derceto. After this search and many other sections of the game, the truth reveals. Jeremy did an agreement with Dark Man in order to save Derceto and offered his soul.
At the end of the game, we learn that Derceto members actually make dark magic. They offer Grace in order to call The Black Goat of the Woods. But our main characters ends this dark magic and after this act, the tree became the final boss and after you beat it, you save both Grace and Jeremy.
Alone in the Dark Endings
Alone in the Dark has total of 5 endings you can unlock. These endings can be unlocked by collecting lagniappes. If you offer them in correct way and doing certain things, you can unlock these endings. Endings are easy to reach and it’s good to see different endings since the game is not that long. We definitely recommend you to watch or experience these endings in your games.
Other Details About Alone in the Dark and Closing Statements
Alone in the Dark is a great game if you are looking for horror TPS game, in these days this type of games are not that common. If you buy this game, you will definitely enjoy but also keep that in mind that if you are not going for full achievements, then your adventure will end soon after you beat the game twice. We recommend you to beat the game with both characters since you will see different perspectives when you play with both of them.
Alone in the Dark is a 50% loyal to it’s original. Some things has changed from the original one, we can give few examples. In the original, Emily’s uncle, Jeremy did actually killed himself and that’s why Emily came to Derceto. Meanwhile Edward comes to Derceto because someone asked him to get an expensive piano from Derceto after the death of Jeremy.
Also in the original, when you choose one character, the other character doesn’t take place in the game. So Edward and Emily is not connected to theirself in the original game. Meanwhile, Grace is not even in the original game, her story taken from the second game.
Some changes are needed for Remakes and we think that Alone in the Dark is a great game like this. Based on the success of the game, developers might add DLC or extra content to the game. We are looking forward to see more Alone in the Dark Remakes and hopefully the game gets the required attention from the players.
