Artificial Intelligence Is Taking Over Steam Games
The influence of AI in the gaming world is growing daily. One in five new games released on Steam in 2025 explicitly utilizes AI in some way. The transformation of game development processes is remarkable, as this technology, used in a wide range of areas from visual production to storytelling, is becoming increasingly prevalent.
AI Use in Steam Games Is Increasingly Widespread
A new report published by Totally Human Media CEO Ichiro Lambe has shed light on the use of generative AI in the gaming industry. Analyzing Steam API data, Lambe revealed that one in every five games released in 2025 utilized AI in some way. This represents a significant increase compared to the previous year.
According to the report, AI is most commonly used in visual production. It is frequently used in graphic elements, particularly backgrounds, models, and general visual assets. It is also noted that AI is being utilized in technical areas such as audio production, marketing content, story and text creation, and even code and game logic.
Some games integrate AI directly into gameplay. Nyric allows players to create 3D worlds with text commands. inZOI, developed by Krafton and considered a competitor to The Sims, enables AI to generate textures and 3D visuals. Examples like these demonstrate that AI plays an active role not only in developer tools but also in the player experience.
While AI is currently only detected in 7% of all games on Steam, this number is rapidly increasing. Last year, only around 1,000 games reportedly used AI, this figure has risen to 7,818 this year. The shift towards generative AI, particularly by large studios, suggests that this increase will accelerate in the coming period.
