Battlefield Works Put Need for Speed on Background
Electronic Arts (EA) announced that Criterion Games will now be working on a completely new Battlefield game. This situation has thrown the future of the Need for Speed series, which the Criterion team has been working on for many years, into uncertainty. It was stated that there is no work on the next game in the series, and that Criterion is now working entirely on the single-player mode of Battlefield.
Need for Speed Unbound Remains the Last Game
Criterion Games has managed to keep the series afloat with successful games such as Need for Speed Unbound in recent years. However, in 2023, a large part of the Criterion team was shifted to the Battlefield project. As part of this transition, EA announced that Criterion will serve as one of four studios called Battlefield Studios.
Vince Zampella, the head of the Battlefield series, has confirmed that Criterion is now “fully integrated” into Battlefield. Zampella said that they are taking community feedback into account and plan to bring the series back in “new and interesting ways” in the future. However, this statement did not eliminate the uncertainty about when the series will get a new game.
Need for Speed Unbound, which was released in 2022, was recorded as the last game in the series. The game tried to please the player community with a two-year support plan. However, Criterion recently announced that they are no longer planning new content for Unbound. This decision has raised concerns about the future of the series.
Need for Speed, which once introduced a new game every year, is now preparing for the longest hiatus in its history. Since Battlefield’s release date has not yet been announced, Need for Speed’s return may be delayed even further. While EA’s move to shift the Criterion team to Battlefield may have disappointed Need for Speed fans, there is a glimmer of hope that the company has not completely shelved the series. For now, the future of Need for Speed remains uncertain.
