Call of Duty has Managed to Pull Ahead of GTA 6 in the Competition
Two classic games from the Call of Duty series have managed to surpass GTA 6 with their strong debut on the PlayStation Store. Activision’s unexpected re-releases of Black Ops and Black Ops 2 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 had been criticized for their high prices and limited technical innovations. Despite this, the intense interest shown by players in these beloved titles has propelled both games into the store’s top sellers.
Call of Duty Games Take the Top Spot on PlayStation Store
Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 have overtaken GTA 6 on the PlayStation Store sales charts. The fact that these games, which haven’t been available on modern PlayStation consoles for many years, are accessible again has particularly attracted veteran players. Both titles are considered among the most beloved in the series for their story modes, multiplayer content, and Zombies experiences. The fact that the Black Ops games are directly playable provides a significant advantage over GTA 6, which is currently only available for pre-order.
GTA 6 quickly topped the sales charts as soon as pre-orders opened. However, the release of the Black Ops games caused a temporary shift in the rankings. GTA 6 pre-orders are expected to accelerate again if Rockstar shares a new trailer or reveals significant information about the game. Therefore, it remains uncertain whether the current dominance of Call of Duty games will last long.
The re-released versions don’t offer a major remaster. While the games lack significant graphical improvements or extensive new features, some classic modes are reportedly missing. Despite this, the sales success shows that simply porting older games to current consoles could generate significant demand. Players’ interest in nostalgic Call of Duty experiences could pave the way for Activision to re-release other classic titles.
Black Ops and Black Ops 2 are currently only available for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. On the Xbox side, since the original versions are playable via backward compatibility, new ports may not have been prepared. The absence of Switch 2 versions is considered a missed opportunity by players. Call of Duty surpassing GTA 6 demonstrates that classic games can still achieve strong sales when re-released at the right time.
