Civilization 7 Bids Farewell to Legendary Mechanics

Following popular player requests, Firaxis has decided to withdraw one of Civilization 7‘s most controversial features. The studio is now testing a new mode that allows players to continue with the same civilization across all ages. This change marks the end of the series’ “civilization-by-age” system.

Civilization 7 Is Dropping the Age System

According to Firaxis’s latest developer diary, the team is working on a major change that will fundamentally impact the game’s overall structure. Since its release, Civilization 7 has required players to switch civilizations every three ages. While this change was designed with the idea of ​​”a fresh start in every age,” it hasn’t met with the expected response.

The new system will allow players to continue throughout history with a single civilization. Firaxis aims for this change to foster a stronger connection with their empires and bring back the “build your own civilization” feeling that is at the heart of the series. The development team confirmed that the new mode is currently in testing, stating, “This was the most requested feature. Now, players can guide their chosen civilization through the ages.”

Civilization 7’s “age-based civilization system” was perceived by many players as antithetical to the series’ spirit. Constantly switching civilizations eroded the sense of progression and disrupted the game’s pace. This led to Civilization 7 falling behind Civilizations 6 and 5 in player count.

Firaxis states that the new mode will fundamentally alter the game’s balance. Civilization 7 is entirely built on an “age system.” Therefore, adding this mode to the game will require rebalancing all civilizations.

In addition to this major change, the studio also announced a free naval-themed content update. The update adds new civilizations to the game, including pirate leader Edward Teach, Tonga, and the Pirate Republic. Sayidda Al Hurra, Iceland, and the Ottomans will also be included in the next content pack.

Firaxis thanked fans by announcing, “This content, which will be released on November 4th, will be free to Civilization 7 owners until January 5th, 2026.” It appears that Civilization 7 will shape both the series’ past and future with its radical changes.
