Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Has No End
Sandfall Interactive’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has captivated millions of players with both its story and soundtrack. However, the game’s varying endings have caused considerable confusion within the community. Some believe one ending is more accurate than the other; others believe one side’s happiness comes at the expense of another’s tragedy. Lead writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen has put an end to these debates: “There’s no right ending, nor is there an official ending. Every ending has its own price.”
Every Choice Has a Price in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
In an interview with Lits Play, Svedberg-Yen emphasized that each ending in the game has a specific purpose. “Both endings exist for a reason,” she said, noting that each one offers both hope and sadness. She explained that no matter which ending players choose, they won’t achieve a perfect ending, as life itself is rarely perfect.
According to the author, the game’s philosophy rejects the classic conflict between good and evil. Instead, it presents a world where both sides operate with their own values and perspectives. “Both sides care about the future, they just have different ideas about how to shape it,” Svedberg-Yen stated, adding that players can decide which ending is “correct” based on their own perspectives.
This approach centers free will in the game’s narrative. The choices players make along the way determine not only the events themselves but also the emotional evolution of the characters. Therefore, each player’s experience becomes unique; one player’s tragedy can be another’s salvation.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has earned a special place in the gaming world with its profound themes, strong character writing, and artistic narrative. Svedberg-Yen’s comments once again demonstrate why the game’s ending has been so widely discussed. It appears that Expedition 33 isn’t about a “happy ending,” but rather a personal search for meaning.
