Cyberpunk 2077 gets an 80s VHS aesthetic with Reshader

Cyberpunk 2077, thanks to the creativity of the modding community, continues to maintain its freshness even after all these years. This time, the latest work transforms Night City from a modern science fiction city into a retro-futuristic world reminiscent of an old VHS tape. This custom setting, created using Reshader, successfully integrates the analog video aesthetic of the 80s and 90s into the game’s atmosphere. The result is a visual experience that is both nostalgic and surprisingly playable.

Cyberpunk 2077 Reshader Setting Revives VHS Nostalgia

The most striking aspect of this Reshader setting is that it’s far from being a superficial “retro filter.” The work is based on flaws specific to VHS technology, such as ghosting, chroma bleed, color bandwidth limitations, and phosphor traces. Thanks to these details, the image doesn’t feel intentionally distorted, but rather as if it’s truly coming from an analog source. The developer emphasizes that they have specifically avoided artificial and exaggerated effects.

The resulting visual style unexpectedly suits the world of Cyberpunk 2077. Neon lights, holograms, and dark streets, combined with a VHS aesthetic, create an atmosphere reminiscent of classic science fiction films and tabletop RPGs. Although the visual smoothness has increased, details are not completely lost, resulting in a visually pleasing experience during extended gameplay.

Comparisons within the community also support the success of this mod. Some players actually recorded Cyberpunk 2077 footage onto VHS tapes, digitized it, and compared it side-by-side with the Reshader version. Interestingly, many people stated that the footage obtained with Reshader was more balanced and playable. This shows that the work is not just a visual show.

Currently, the Reshader mod is not publicly available. However, the developer says they plan to further refine the mod and share it with the community after the holiday season. When released, it is expected to become a very popular mod, especially for those who love photo mods and want to re-experience Cyberpunk 2077 with a completely different spirit.
