Deadlock Modder Started Selling Skins Before Valve

Deadlock has become a game that’s been talked about even before its release, but this time it’s not about gameplay or content. While the game doesn’t even have an official revenue model yet, a modder starting to sell skins for a fee has caused a stir. Frankly, this has raised the question of whether commerce can start before a game is even released.

Deadlock Skin Sales Spark Controversy

This special skin developed for Deadlock was put up for sale by a modder named GigWhat. Called “Mystic North,” this pack isn’t just a simple costume. It includes 6 different color options, special effects, a glowing cape, and interface changes. It’s clear that a lot of effort and work went into it.

But here’s the critical point: This skin works entirely client-side. That means no one except the person who bought it can see the skin. It’s a kind of “see for yourself, be happy for yourself” system. And that’s exactly where players get stuck. Because for many, a skin is also a matter of showing off.

The price also fueled the debate. Initially set at $20, it was reduced to $10 after backlash. But even that seemed strange to many players. Because there’s a game that doesn’t even have an official store yet, and even Valve, the developer, isn’t making money from the game, making a mod paid was considered “too early” by some players.

The community reaction was also quite harsh. On social media, many players questioned, “Is it logical to pay for a skin that no one can see?”, while others thought this could cause problems in the future. The possibility that these kinds of mods might not work when the game officially launches is a serious risk for those who buy them.

On the mod developer’s side, the situation is a little more humane. It is stated that the project is the result of weeks of hard work and that it was made paid for due to personal reasons. So, it’s not entirely about “making money,” but also about wanting to be rewarded for one’s labor.
