Death Stranding 2 Almost Made You Wipe Your Memory

Hideo Kojima’s boundless creativity is once again on the agenda. An idea he initially planned for Death Stranding 2 was groundbreaking in the gaming world. The famous designer had imagined a system where the character would lose skills and knowledge over time if the player took a long break from the game. If this mechanic were to be implemented, radical effects such as the character forgetting their profession or how to use a weapon would be on the agenda.

Death Stranding 2’s Forgetting System That Will Challenge the Player

Kojima detailed this unusual idea, which he called the “forgetting game,” in the latest KOJI10 podcast episode. If the player does not play the game for a long time, the character begins to lose their memory; first some skills, then their profession, and eventually even how to walk. This situation will force the player to stay in the game constantly, otherwise it would be difficult to get the character back to their old state. In this way, the gaming experience would be shaped not only by action, but also by continuity.

This idea once again shows Kojima’s interest in innovative and experimental systems in games. He had previously managed to play with the player’s perception with mechanics such as weakening an elderly sniper using time in Metal Gear Solid 3. This time, he planned to test the player’s loyalty with a real-time forgetting system.

However, Kojima stated that he was not sure about the commercial viability of this idea. He gave up on the idea of a “forgetting game” because he thought most players would be uncomfortable with such a mechanic. Nevertheless, this suggestion is important in terms of showing how experimental and different approaches Death Stranding 2 was developed.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is still eagerly awaited, and even this idea that Kojima did not implement shows how creative a vision the game was shaped. Players will have to wait a little longer to find out what kind of unusual surprises they will encounter this time.
