Destiny 3’s Cost is Jaw-Dropping

Destiny 3 has become one of the most talked-about topics among players following the announcement that support for Destiny 2 will end. For fans who have been waiting for a new main game after Bungie’s nearly ten-year support of Destiny 2, the outlook doesn’t look very bright. According to new claims, Destiny 3 could require a massive budget exceeding $500 million due to current development costs, which is causing PlayStation to distance itself from the project for now.

The Cost Barrier for Destiny 3 is Growing

Jason Schreier, a well-known figure in the industry, states that one of the biggest reasons Destiny 3 is not currently in active development is its cost. According to the claims, modern game development processes, global inflation, and Bungie’s Seattle-based structure are significantly increasing the budget for such a project. Therefore, it is estimated that the cost of Destiny 3 could exceed $500 million. You can find this at 13:12 minutes into the video.

The remarkable aspect of this figure becomes apparent when compared to the massive budget Activision allocated to the Destiny brand in 2014. The $500 million plan discussed at the time wasn’t just for a single game; it was a long-term strategy encompassing multiple games and expansions spread over years. Today, it’s being said that even a single Destiny 3 project could exceed that level.

It’s claimed that PlayStation doesn’t want to allocate such a large sum to a live service project at this stage. The cancellation of The Last of Us Online and unsuccessful live service attempts like Concord may have increased Sony’s risk perception. Furthermore, it’s noted that this estimated budget doesn’t include marketing costs, meaning the actual expenditure could be much higher.

On the Bungie side, there are rumors of significant layoffs following the end of Destiny 2 support. The studio’s focus is currently on Marathon, but it’s unclear whether that project will fully convince players. While Destiny 3 currently seems like the big comeback fans want, the cost calculation makes this dream difficult to realize in the near future.
